It won't be long until Father's Day is upon us, a day when we honour fathers and celebrate fatherhood, paternal bonds, and the influence of fathers in society. Usually it is celebrated on the third Sunday of June.
Father's Day was inaugurated in the early twentieth century to complement Mother's Day in celebrating fatherhood and male parenting. However, long before modern times, a young Babylonian named Elmesu wished his father good health and a long life on a clay tablet.
So, Father's Day's been around longer than many people think!
On June 19, 1910, the first 'modern' Father's Day was celebrated through a Sonora Smart Dodd of Spokane, Washington. After listening to a church sermon at Spokane's Central Methodist Episcopal Church in 1909 about the newly recognized Mother's Day, Dodd felt strongly that fatherhood needed recognition.
She wanted a celebration that honored fathers like her own father, William Smart, a Civil War veteran who was left to raise his family alone when his wife died giving birth to their sixth child when Sonora was 16 years old.
From then on Father's Day became the growing phenomena and event that it is today.
